My Birthday

Cards from the kiddos.

I'm way behind here, but I had a great birthday in Sept!! Scott sent flowers for me, and if getting them wasn't enough, the reaction of our girls to him sending flowers was priceless. They were smitten, for sure. With a glowing smile, swaying and her head to the side Reagan said, "He loves you." Awwwwwww. Yes he does! Thanks, Scott!
Reagan was a gem on my special day. She allowed me to sleep in and entertained the little two in the morning. She coordinated the card making party on my behalf and she made me a bagel, which was on this plate here, with this note. I'm not sure it's true, what she wrote, but if she thinks so then that's all that matters! It's something to strive for!
We went to church and when we got home there was a cake on my front step. My cake fairy was my dear friend Joyce, who didn't want me to have to make my own cake (even though I already had) It was still a very sweet, sweet gesture. Love her! We then went to my friend Amy's house for homemade pizza, homemade ice cream and cake!! It was a nice day. Thanks for all the well wishes. I'm saving my birthday money for an ipad2! We'll see how long it takes me to save!
I should mention I also had a very sweet card fairy. The day before my Birthday I received a card from our friend Darin and I figured he was being sweet and we have some insurance with him so I thought maybe this was something he just does, ya know. I also got one from a high school friend who was recently planning our 15th reunion and she knew I wasn't coming and that Scott was gone so I figured she was being sweet too. Then on the Monday after my birthday I got 3 more cards from friends and the next day a few more! I finally figured out that my dear friend Emily had messaged some mutual friends and asked them to help shower me with love on my birthday since Scott was gone. I love her. I thank all that participated: Darin, Nicole, Jessie, Abby, Jayme, Wendy, Carrie, Melissa and Emily. I really appreciate it!
I also got a card from another special gal and receiving it really made me smile.....REALLY smile! It completed my God wink moment of my week that week! My friend Nicole from college and her family sent me a sweet card.
The God wink was that my Bible study right now is on Women and Friendship. At the Bible study before my birthday the leader said to think of a friend that you really knows you and you could tell absolutely anything and they'd be right there for you, no matter what........that's Emily. Emily fills this role for many, she's that amazing and I only hope I've been as good of a friend to her.
Next, the leader said, now think of a friend that you maybe have lost touch with but you wish you hadn't but life has just separated you for one reason or another......that's Nicole. I love her deeply and her parents are amazing and when I think back of fond memories of college, that's who is in them. Now Nicole is married to Bill and has three beautiful children, a family I've never physically met, but think about all the time. My one true regret when we were living back in Iowa is not taking the time to reconnect like I'd hoped and planned. We've continued to trade Christmas cards and I love catching up that way but the craziness of life just got in the way, or I let it, rather. She said in her card that she reads this blog, which I didn't know, but it warms my heart. I thank God for confirming to me that the two very people I thought of that week as special, amazing and great, are just that! Thanks Ladies!!!

Caught!

This is why I leave my camera on the counter! I caught Brady going for more spaghetti sauce after dinner the other night. When I asked what he was doing he just smiled and said, "it good!" LOL

Root viewer update

Reagan hypothesised that they would sprout in this order: radish, onion, carrot.
Brett hypothesized that they would sprout in this order: radish, carrot, onion.
Reagan was right. She guessed the correct order.

A nice cool day.

We had a really nice fall like day one day a couple weeks ago on a non preschool day. The little two and I did lots of playing and some yard work and pulled weeds too. You'd think they would have taken a nap, but nope! Darn!

Here's some school work we did, Daddy!

Reagan learned about the skeletal system and the other systems of the body.

A mouse, a duck, and a frog.

Humpty Dumpty and Jack, as in the one that went up the hill with Jill.

A cow and a bus.....I'm guessing rectangle was the shape of the day here!

God made the moon and the stars.

Pictures we drew.

Addison's hands.

Brady's hands. He was NOT interested in doing this project at first, I guess. He didn't want to get his hands dirty. I could only laugh because Brett was the EXACT same way when he went to Ladybug Preschool in Iowa City when he was 3. Oh, my clean boys!! LOL

....close up in case you wanted to read what it says.

Addison and Brady's glittery suns. God made the sun and this glitter made a mess, but whatever....

Nail polish........

So, as many of you know I don't really enjoy talking on the phone. This here would be another reason why......naughtiness happens while I'm on the phone! I was talking to a friend in Maryland and thought the babes were playing nicely upstairs in the play room. Wrong. Reagan had painted her nails earlier in the day and I distinctly remember saying, "Make sure the lid is on tight and that you put it up where the little two cannot get it." And I remember her saying, " I know Mom, I did." Wrong. Or she did and it just wasn't good enough......I should expect nothing less from two kids who can get to places within my cell phone that I didn't know existed! They were COVERED in polish. If you saw the back of Brady you'd see it there too....and in each armpit. Lucky for them I had a full bottle of remover.....scrubbing away we went! After cleaning them I used so much remover that I feared they were flammable, it was off to the tub. Then I'm sure I put them in a nice quiet place and told the other two to watch them for a bit so I could not only lower my blood pressure, but 'de-pink' the upstairs bathroom sink, and floor, and door, and walls, and toilet seat, and the hallway floor, and the carpet.....the carpet isn't 100% yet but I haven't cared enough to really try to get it out. Needless to say Reagan hasn't painted her nails since...........

One HOT Saturday.

The Sat. of our Whine & Dine it was HOT! We came home and ran the sprinkler. Reagan's friend Joely came over to play too. Brett and the little two enjoyed a ride on the play set between runs.

September Whine & Dine

He's swatting a fly, not his sister.....this time. LOL

Eating and playing at Kidsville Park in New Bern, NC.

Good times. Good folks. One month down!

Reagan with Rachel Workman and Caitlynn Alarid.

In order to keep the ladies and kiddos of Scott's Det connected and sane I'm coordinating monthly potlucks. We had our first one mid Sept., one month into the deployment. We all met at Kidsville Park to play, eat, and enjoy each others company. Another thought is happy wives make for at ease husbands which makes for a happy OIC (Scott) which makes for a happy at ease me! It serves as a nice countdown as well! I need to get my rear in gear and get the location locked in for Oct.'s gathering. That one will be a tail gate theme wear we'll wear shirts or jersey's for our favorite college or pro team. We're going to eat walking tacos and paint pumpkins too!
We're getting Det Delta T shirts made too. I had a local screen printing business work with the MACS-2 logo to create one for the Det. Those are now ordered and will be here in a few weeks! Deployment, shmoiment.....we've got this! But we do miss our men!

Just like Brett

The other day Brady wanted to get into Brett's Tae Kwon Do uniform. I rolled all the ends and helped him into it and I have to say he looked pretty stinkin' cute! He then gave me a show of all of his "moves". He even did the "yah!" and he said, "I do like Brett!" Glad he's not old enough to join....we'd be broke! LOL

His kick!
More moves. Such a goof!

Addison and Brady's first day of school.

Here are our big, little kids all ready for Temple Preschool!! If Scott weren't gone they wouldn't be going, but this mama needs a guaranteed break to look forward to so off they go on Tues. and Thurs. mornings from 9-12. They've already learned so much, it's fun to see! They love their little friends and the little songs they come home singing are precious! Precious are those six hours a week that I try to get any shopping or appointments done, shopping is much quicker and more enjoyable when alone!!! Thanks, Babe, for approving this expense!! Oh, and aren't they the cutest!?!

Washin' Daddy's truck!

Look Dad! We washed your truck for you! Mom parked it in the yard to keep the little two from running in the street. Then she lost the truck keys so it sat in the yard for awhile after we were done....oops! We still love her anyways and she did find them....eventually! We love you! Every time we got into the garage a little person says, "that's Daddy's cruck!" Yep, it is!

Got milk bubbles?

If you cannot beat 'em...........join 'em! We were seeing who could get their bubbles the highest!

Good taste!

The snakes here seem to like my taste in outside decor! Found this little guy on the front porch. I was able to get a picture but to catch him would have been impossible.....those little ones are quick! I'm 0-2 with them. When I went after him he slithered up into the siding, much to the dismay of my husband....sorry Babe, he was QUICK! I did kick the crap out of the siding so perhaps he's dead in there.....let's go with that. I think it's a baby rat snake.....should look it up to see but a lot of times the babies don't look like the adults so it's hard to tell what they are. Most likely he's a bug eater, which makes him friendly. If he's on my porch eating bugs then I prefer him to the Five Sided Skink that is living under Scott's tool box and crapping all over the garage! ***Update*** I did some looking and I'm wrong (shocker, I know) it's a juvenile racer. Pretty certain that the three snakes we've had this year and the one the neighbor caught last year were all racers. Non venomous and all of that but will strike if bothered (the adults anyways).

Hurricane Irene

We had our first real hurricane threat of the year: Irene! I was tracking her for a good week before she hit and was happy that she was pushing East and I wasn't going to evacuate. Then as she narrowed in on the coast of Eastern NC she tracked back west and was heading right for us. Hmmmmmmmm.......what to do? I book a hotel just over the North/South Carolina border, I wanted to head in the opposite direction on every other person trying to escape as well. It really was a back up plan. I really hate evacuating. After much debate with myself and with Scott and God I went with my gut and stayed and am glad we did. I nearly changed my mind and grabbed our needed papers and such and left. I prayed for a sign and what pops on the news but a report of a family of five evacuating and they wrecked and the mother was killed. That was my sign, we were staying. My fear of something happening to us in the act of leaving was greater than my fear of being in real danger during the storm. It proved to be an amazing experience, one I/we welcomed, endured, and conquered!
In the above picture you see Brett, Addison and Brady chilling on the newly located patio furniture! I got all of the outside items anchored or put in. Reagan helped me with the table, grill and fire pit. Thanks, big girl!!
I will note that since Scott had just left his command did call to see if I needed any assistance, which I didn't, but I did appreciate the gesture. The neighbors were there if I needed them too.

I had called our friend Randal that grew up here in New Bern. I asked him what he thought I should do. He felt that since we had no trees and no water near us we would be fine as long as I was prepared for the power to go out for a day or so. Ok, no problem. I trust his judgment on "local" matters! The storm was a long one. I had the big kids sleep downstairs with me just so we were all right there together. Never once did I feel scared or worried. The storm just raged and we carried on. The power did go out so we just played as if it were a no TV day here. We ate the food the would 'go bad' without being cold. We put things like milk and fruit in the cooler on ice so we could get at it again and again without disturbing the coldness that was in the fridge.
The kids made a big fort to play in and played on the stairs with a sleeping bag....what a ride! They did well with just playing around.

Reagan and Brett playing some "Go Fish" with the Uno cards. We had some chats about all the things that use electricity and how thankful we were that it was invented!! The kids were wonderful at realizing that even if we were "without" there were others who were probably getting worse....damage, losing homes, etc.

Addison and Brady enjoying a snack.

They enjoyed playing with the flashlights too...which I didn't encourage, but they did get one that was for "play". We did a pretty good job of using the daylight until it wasn't possible and ate to candle light. When it was cool in the night we opened the windows and when it got hot in the day we closed up the house and pulled the curtains to conserve the cool air. We managed fine.

Imaginations were running wild. I think these two are playing Tae Kwon Do Barbies!

Once I realized the power was going to be out for a good while I had the big two eat the ice cream since it would have been trash anyways. They were SO pumped! WHAT? REALLY? They did their duty to "save" the ice cream from it's certain death in the defrosting freezer. We didn't have a whole of of things in the fridges and freezer that I was worried about losing. After they were losing their "cool" we adventured, and that's not an understatement, to get ice. I had heard that my favorite grocery store here, Harris Teeter, was giving out free bags but I figured by the time we got there they'd be gone so we headed to the Havelock Wal Mart which I'd heard had some too. We were greeted with a long line waiting for an ice truck, but no arrival time...no thanks! We decided to try Harris Teeter and yep, it was all gone. I drove as far as 40 minutes away to find ice with no luck. Harris Teeter employees said their may be another truck at 7pm, well, we happened to be driving back through that area from our adventure out so I decided to stop and pulled up just as they were handing out the free bags. Yippee! I got four bags. Two for the freezer stuff, one for the cooler we were using for the milk and such, and one to eat, cuz I love ice in my drink and I REALLY wanted a cold, icy diet coke!! Ends up a neighbor down the way wasn't able to get any ice so I gave them one bag so they could enjoy a nice cold beverage too! That ice all lasted a good 24 hours. We went out for more on Monday and were able to purchase some with less hassle as by then most of New Bern had their power back, half of our neighborhood did, in fact.

Pictureka by flash light adds a whole new challenge to the game!!!

It was just like camping! We cooked on the grill and used the burner which made it not a problem at all! I must have been doing bacon in this pic as you can see Buddy is just waiting for some to fall! Something about the smell of bacon cooking outside on a cool morning makes me think of camping as a kid. I could picture my uncle Jim all set up next to his camper with his griddle and the sizzle of the bacon teasing my ears and taste buds. Yum!
We may have eaten better with the power out than when it was on!!! Pork chops and taters, bacon, eggs, pancakes, toast. We even cooked some frozen pizzas on there.

I found this little guy in our garage after the storm. I'm not sure when he got in. I was using my truck to charge my cell phone and needed to start the truck to make sure its battery didn't die so I had the garage door open to release the fumes. The truck sat half out of the garage for not very long and when I got back there he was right by the recycle bin, which is up by the door to get into the house. Who knows but I told him I was glad he wasn't a snake! I scooted him onto a cereal box and took him down to the water near the neighbor's house.

As the hurricane neared I was sure to charge the DSI for the kids. When pretending got old they did take turns getting some video time in. All in all I'm actually thankful for the 'test' the hurricane provided us. My thoughts after the hurricane are this, “It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts.” K. T. Jong
We were without power for 65 hours. It came on after 60 hours of being off, was on over night then went out again for 5 hours on Tues. morning. I assume it was to hook others up to the lines. We lived. Some of our friends in a subdivision not to far from us didn't get power until 3 days after we did and some in the county to the North STILL don't have it as I type this, if you can imagine.
The cell phone service was shotty so Facebook proved to be a good way to communicate and update. Replying on there was simpler than replying to dozens of texts and phone calls. Several neighbors and friends in the area were checking up on us so we were in good hands. God had his arms around us as not one thing was damaged here and my usually anxious mind was at ease. Thank you, Jesus!

First Day of School

Here's Reagan on her first day of 3rd grade in Ms. Hunter's class at Creekside Elementary!!

Reagan and Joely waiting for the bus.

Posing with Daddy Bear and Daddy!!

Brett and I had a meeting on the 1st day of school so I took his picture but we really didn't count it as the first since the bus wasn't involved! We had and hour and a half orientation to help the kinders get acquainted with the school.

Brett's first day of school. He's all ready!! They had half days the first week, which he wasn't impressed with, but I had to remind him that not all of the kids went to preschool for 3 years like he did!!

Reagan and Brett waiting for the bus. Reagan was a sweetie and walked Brett and the neighbor boy to their rooms the first week so they wouldn't get lost in the crowd. Thanks, Reagan!!

And there he goes! He's really liking school, but I'm not surprised. He was ready.
